UK STUDY GUIDE

Study Hospitality in the UK

Hospitality is one of the UK's largest employment sectors, contributing around £93 billion to the economy and employing 3.5 million people according to UKHospitality. The industry spans hotels, restaurants, events, tourism and increasingly experience-based leisure businesses. UK Hospitality degrees are recognised internationally and feed graduates into the global hotel and resort industry — Marriott, Hilton, IHG, Accor, Four Seasons and Rosewood all recruit from UK hospitality programmes.

Why study Hospitality in the UK?

UK Hospitality Management programmes combine operational training in food and beverage, rooms division, events and revenue management with broader business modules in marketing, HR, finance and strategy. Most undergraduate programmes include 6-12 months of paid industry placement at a UK or international hotel — often at four- or five-star properties. Universities such as Surrey, Oxford Brookes, Strathclyde, Edinburgh Napier and Coventry are particularly strong. International fees range from £13,500 to £20,000 per year at universities and £12,500 to £17,500 at pathway colleges. Foundation Year, HND, Bachelor's, Top-up and MSc routes are all available, with January, May and September intakes widely offered.

Career outcomes

Graduates take operational roles (front office manager, F&B supervisor, events coordinator) and join graduate leadership programmes at major hotel groups. Starting salaries typically sit at £22,000-£28,000 for operational roles, with management trainee schemes paying £25,000-£32,000 plus accommodation in many cases. Senior hospitality leadership (General Manager of a four- or five-star hotel) typically pays £60,000-£100,000+ depending on property and location. The Graduate Route visa applies; Hospitality Manager is on the Shortage Occupation List, making Skilled Worker visa sponsorship realistic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the placement year paid?

Yes — most UK Hospitality placements are paid at the going rate for the operational role you fill (typically £18,000-£24,000 for a 12-month placement, often plus accommodation if it's a hotel placement). Placements at five-star international properties can pay significantly more. Universities arrange placements through their partner networks and provide support with applications.

Can I work in international hotels after graduating?

Yes — UK Hospitality degrees are particularly well-recognised internationally. Major hotel groups operate global management trainee schemes that explicitly target UK and Swiss hospitality school graduates. Long-term international career mobility is one of the strongest selling points of a UK hospitality qualification.

Will I need to work shifts and evenings?

Yes — hospitality is an operational industry and most graduate roles include shifts, weekend work and evening hours, particularly in the early career years. This is true at all hotel groups globally. Career progression typically reduces shift exposure as you move into department-head and management roles.

Is Events Management the same as Hospitality?

Overlapping but distinct. Events Management focuses on planning and delivering events (conferences, weddings, festivals, corporate events) — this can be standalone (event agencies) or within a hotel/venue. Hospitality is broader, covering accommodation, food and beverage, and the overall guest experience. Many UK programmes combine the two as 'Hospitality and Events Management'.
