UK STUDY GUIDE

Study Fashion in the UK

The UK fashion industry contributes around £62 billion to the national economy and is the fourth-largest in Europe. London is one of the 'Big Four' global fashion capitals alongside Paris, Milan and New York, and London Fashion Week is a fixture in the international fashion calendar. UK fashion education — Central Saint Martins, London College of Fashion, Royal College of Art, Westminster, Kingston — has produced many of the world's leading designers (Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Stella McCartney, Phoebe Philo, Christopher Kane).

Why study Fashion in the UK?

UK Fashion programmes split into creative pathways (Fashion Design, Fashion Knitwear, Menswear, Womenswear, Footwear) and business pathways (Fashion Buying, Fashion Marketing, Fashion Communication, Fashion Journalism). Studio teaching, intensive critiques and a final-year collection or major project define the design route; the business route includes placements with UK fashion retailers and brands. International fees range from £18,000 to £28,000 per year at the top fashion schools; broader fashion programmes at other universities sit at £14,000-£20,000; pathway college Foundation Year routes start around £12,500. Most programmes include a placement year — many at major UK or international fashion houses.

Career outcomes

Design graduates take roles as assistant designer, junior designer, knitwear designer, print designer and pattern cutter at UK and international fashion houses, high-street brands and independent labels. Business graduates work as buyers, merchandisers, marketing executives, PR executives and trend forecasters. Starting salaries in London typically range from £22,000-£28,000 for design and merchandising roles, £24,000-£32,000 for buying and marketing. The Graduate Route visa applies; the Creative Worker visa covers certain design positions; many fashion houses sponsor Skilled Worker visas for design roles.

Courses available through AEN

We work with UK partners offering Foundation Year Fashion (£5,760-£9,790), BA Fashion Design, BA Fashion Buying and Merchandising, BA Fashion Marketing, BA Fashion Communication, Top-up BA, and MA Fashion programmes. Intakes are usually September only; portfolio-based programmes don't typically run January starts.

Entry requirements

Most BA Fashion programmes require 96-128 UCAS points plus a portfolio. The portfolio is the dominant factor — strong sketchbooks, garment construction work, fabric experimentation and finished pieces matter more than academic grades. IELTS 6.0 with no element below 5.5. Foundation Year accepts students without a developed portfolio and is specifically designed to prepare you for BA Fashion application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know how to sew?

For BA Fashion Design, basic garment construction skills are expected — universities want to see evidence of pattern cutting, sample making and finishing in your portfolio. Foundation Year programmes include these skills from scratch. Fashion Buying and Marketing programmes don't require construction skills — they're focused on business and brand analysis.

Is Central Saint Martins the only good UK fashion school?

Central Saint Martins (CSM) is internationally famous, but it's not the only strong UK programme. London College of Fashion, Royal College of Art (postgraduate only), Westminster, Kingston, Manchester School of Art and Glasgow School of Art all produce highly employable graduates. The best programme for you depends on your specific interest area and portfolio strength.

Will I get to do a fashion show?

Most BA Fashion Design programmes culminate in a final-year collection show. Top programmes (CSM, LCF, Westminster) hold their shows during London Fashion Week and attract major industry press and recruiters. Mid-tier programmes hold their shows on campus or at smaller industry venues. The final show is your most important industry showcase.

Can I work in fashion as an international graduate?

Yes — the UK fashion industry has long relied on international talent. The Graduate Route visa lets you take junior fashion roles for two years post-graduation without sponsorship. Mid-level designer roles at established fashion houses are typically sponsored on Skilled Worker visas. The Creative Worker visa applies to some specific design positions.
