The United Kingdom is home to some of the world's most iconic student cities, each with a distinct personality, a range of universities, and a different cost of living. Here are five of the most popular cities for international students in 2026.

1. London — The Global Capital

London needs no introduction. It is home to world-leading institutions including University College London (UCL), King's College London, the London School of Economics (LSE), Queen Mary University of London, and many more. The city offers unmatched access to industries — finance, tech, media, fashion, and the creative arts all have major hubs here.

The trade-off is cost. London is the most expensive city in the UK to live in. A single room in a shared flat costs between £900 and £1,400 per month in most zones. Transport, food, and entertainment are also pricier. However, with the right budgeting and a part-time job (international students on a Student visa can work up to 20 hours per week during term time), London is absolutely manageable. The Graduate Route visa also means many students choose to stay after graduation to build careers.

2. Manchester — The Northern Powerhouse

Manchester is the UK's most popular city for international students outside London, and it is easy to see why. The University of Manchester is a Russell Group university with a Nobel Prize-winning research pedigree, and Manchester Metropolitan University is one of the largest universities in the country. The city's tech and digital sector is growing rapidly, making it a strong choice for computing, engineering, and business students.

Living costs in Manchester are considerably lower than London. Monthly rent for a room in a shared house typically runs between £550 and £900. The city has a vibrant food scene, exceptional live music heritage, two Premier League football clubs, and a famously welcoming attitude towards international newcomers.

3. Birmingham — Diverse, Affordable, and Central

Birmingham is the UK's second-largest city and arguably its most multicultural. It is home to the University of Birmingham (Russell Group), Aston University, Birmingham City University, and Newman University. Its central location means excellent rail links to London (just over an hour), Manchester, and Bristol.

For students from South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa in particular, Birmingham often feels like a home away from home, with thriving communities, familiar foods, and places of worship from almost every faith. Rent is affordable — typically £500 to £800 per month — and the city's new tram network (Metro) makes getting around straightforward.

4. Leeds — The Graduate Employment Hub

Leeds has quietly become one of the UK's most student-friendly cities. The University of Leeds is consistently ranked in the global top 100, and Leeds Beckett University has a strong reputation for professional and applied degrees. The city's business district is growing fast, and its graduate retention rate is among the highest outside London.

Students love Leeds for its compact size (everything is walkable or a short bus ride away), its legendary nightlife, its independent café culture, and its relatively low rents — averaging £500 to £750 per month for a room in a shared house.

5. Nottingham — Value, Quality, and Character

Nottingham rounds out our top five as the best-value option for students who want excellent academic institutions without the higher costs of the larger cities. The University of Nottingham is a Russell Group member and consistently features in global rankings, while Nottingham Trent University has one of the UK's best graduate employment records.

Rent in Nottingham is among the lowest in England for a major university city, with rooms in shared houses starting from around £420 to £650 per month. The city has a rich history, a strong arts scene, and a genuinely warm student community. For students studying medicine, law, sciences, or engineering, Nottingham is an outstanding choice.

How to Choose?

The right city depends on your course, your budget, and the lifestyle you want. Matching course options to cities where you are likely to build the strongest career network is worth considering as part of the decision.
