If English is not your first language and you are planning to study at a UK university, you will almost certainly need to provide proof of your English language proficiency. The three most widely accepted tests are IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, and Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic. Each has its strengths, and choosing the right one can make a significant difference to your preparation strategy and your result.

IELTS Academic — The UK Standard

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is by far the most widely accepted English test at UK universities. It is co-owned by the British Council, IDP, and Cambridge Assessment English, which gives it particular credibility in the UK context. Nearly every UK university accepts IELTS, and it is also accepted for UK visa applications.

The test has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Speaking section is conducted face-to-face with a trained examiner — many test-takers find this more natural than a computer-based speaking test. Scores are reported as a band from 1.0 to 9.0. Most UK universities require an overall band of 6.0 to 6.5, with no section below 5.5 to 6.0. Highly competitive programmes (medicine, law, some Russell Group postgraduate courses) may require 7.0 or higher.

TOEFL iBT — Strong for US-Dual Applications

TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is administered entirely on a computer and online. It is the dominant test for US university applications, and it is also widely accepted at UK universities. The scoring system is different: results are reported on a scale of 0 to 120. A score of 88 to 100 is broadly equivalent to IELTS 6.5 to 7.0.

TOEFL is often preferred by students who are confident typists and prefer a computer-based format. The integrated writing task — where you read, listen, then write — tests a different set of skills from the IELTS writing task. If you are applying to both UK and US universities simultaneously, TOEFL is the more efficient choice.

PTE Academic — The Fastest Results

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English) is a computer-based test that delivers results within 48 hours — significantly faster than IELTS (typically 3 to 5 days) or TOEFL (4 to 8 days). It is accepted by most UK universities and by the UK Home Office for visa purposes.

The test is fully automated — there is no human examiner involved — which some candidates find less stressful than the face-to-face IELTS speaking section. Scores range from 10 to 90. A score of 58 to 65 broadly corresponds to IELTS 6.5 to 7.0.

Which Should You Choose?

Our recommendation: check your specific university's requirements first. Some universities list minimum scores for each test; others accept only IELTS or TOEFL. Once you have confirmed which tests are accepted, consider these factors: Do you prefer face-to-face speaking (IELTS) or computer-based (PTE, TOEFL)? Do you need results quickly (PTE wins)? Are you applying to both UK and US institutions (TOEFL is more versatile)?

Regardless of which test you choose, preparation is key. Aim to sit the test at least six to eight weeks before your application deadline, leaving time to resit if needed. Many universities also offer pre-sessional English courses for students who narrowly miss the required score.
